Discover the power of outdoor learning

At Rooted Learning, we believe in the transformative impact of nature. Explore how our outdoor learning and Forest School programmes unlock potential in every child, fostering growth, confidence, and a deep connection with the natural world.

Outdoor learning for children with SEND

Outdoor learning and Forest School provide children with opportunities to learn in ways that are often more accessible, engaging, and meaningful than a traditional classroom environment. For many children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), being outdoors reduces the pressures and expectations they may associate with formal learning, allowing them to feel calmer, more confident, and ready to engage.

At Rooted Learning, Forest School is far more than outdoor play. It is a carefully planned approach that supports every aspect of a child's development. Through activities such as den building, safe tool use, campfire cooking, woodland exploration, nature crafts, and conservation projects, children develop communication, teamwork, problem-solving, resilience, and independence while learning at their own pace.

The natural environment also provides rich sensory experiences that can help children regulate their emotions and reduce anxiety. The space to move freely, explore different textures, sounds, and smells, and connect with living things, all contribute to a holistic learning experience that nurtures their overall well-being.

Typical Forest School activities

Every Forest School session is designed to inspire curiosity, encourage exploration, and help children develop new skills through hands-on experiences in the natural environment. While no two sessions are exactly the same, children enjoy a wide variety of activities that change with the seasons and are carefully adapted to meet their individual needs and interests.

Children might build dens and shelters, learn to use tools safely for woodwork projects, light and manage campfires under close supervision, and prepare simple food over the fire. They may explore woodland habitats, identify plants and wildlife, go pond dipping, create nature-inspired artwork, practise traditional woodland crafts, or take part in gardening and conservation projects that help care for the environment.

Our sessions also include opportunities for adventure, teamwork, and problem-solving. Children may complete woodland challenges, navigate using maps and natural landmarks, work together to build obstacle courses, or engage in imaginative play that stems directly from their natural surroundings. Our experienced practitioners ensure all activities are safe, inclusive, and tailored to support the unique learning journey of each child.

Our unique approach to outdoor learning

What makes Rooted Learning unique is that outdoor learning is not an occasional enrichment activity or reward, it is a fundamental part of how we teach, support, and inspire children every day. We believe that some of the most powerful learning happens when children are given the time, space, and freedom to explore, take positive risks, and develop meaningful connections with the natural world.
